13th Istanbul Biennial's poetic works tell the stories of cities

The 13th Istanbul Biennial opens its doors to the public on Sept 14 and its exhibits, on display in venues situated in the centre of the city, will be free of charge until the event closes on Oct 20

The biennial addresses the idea of public space not only from the perspective of Istanbul but from all the world cities. Cities such as Prague, Jaffa, Tel Aviv and London are the main focus of the videos, art installations and photographs.

This year the 13th Istanbul Biennial focuses on the notion of the public domain as a political forum. The works in the biennial will serve as a matrix to generate ideas and develop practices and concepts of civilization in the city and how the public space has been conceived and formed in cities around the world. These works will be exhibited at a number of venues located in the centre of the city: Antrepo no.3 in Tophane, GalataGreek Primary School in Karaköy, ARTER and SALT Beyoğlu on İstiklal Street and 5533 in İMÇ 5th Block. The biennial addresses the question not only from the perspective of Istanbul but from all the world cities. Cities such as Prague, Jaffa, Tel Aviv and London are the main focus of the videos, art installations and photographs in the exhibition. It is evident that the artists’ works also focus on the perception of barbarity, while they highlight the role of art in this context; the biennial’s title “Mom, am I barbarian?” referring to poet Lale Müldür’s book of the same title, sheds light on the conceptual framework. The poetic video works, documentary photographs and drawings depict the problems, civilization, changes, culture and sub-cultures of the cities.....

Le trafic a commencé à couler de nouveau sur la place Taksim d'Istanbul, tôt ce matin, après l'achèvement d'un projet de piétonisation controversé. La route entre le boulevard Tarlabaşı et Avenue Cumhuriyet a été rouverte à la circulation après presque un an de construction, en prenant le métro de route et enlever tout type de la circulation des véhicules et des commerces sur un total de 98.000 mètres carrés de surface autour de la place Taksim.fonctionnaires ont dit que l'ouverture de la route à Taksim aidera à soulager le trafic chaotique d'Istanbul, qui est appelé à devenir plus mouvementée avec l'ouverture des écoles le 16 septembre . La nouvelle route a deux voies seulement pour les bus de chaque côté pour une longueur de 100 mètres, ainsi que la zone de 4500 mètres carrés pour les arrêts de bus.

Tunnel souterrain à la place Taksim à Istanbul ouvert à la circulation

Le projet de piétonisation, qui a été réalisée par la municipalité métropolitaine d'Istanbul, comprenait non seulement amener le trafic souterrain, mais aussi la construction d'un centre commercial et de résidence dans le style d'un vieux ottoman Artillery Barracks dans le dernier espace vert du centre-ville d'Istanbul, le parc Gezi . Ce plan suscité des protestations de départ le 27 mai, lorsque les travailleurs de la municipalité ont commencé à enlever les arbres dans le parc Gezi afin de construire le centre commercial / résidence. La réaction de la police lourde pour le mouvement environnemental a déclenché des manifestations qui ont englouti le pays le 31 mai. Un tribunal d'Istanbul a annulé le projet de la caserne en Juin, tout en permettant la construction de la circulation souterraine soit terminée.

Confrontées au nivellement qu’opère la civilisation moderne, nombre d’entre elles s’érodent ou sont en danger de disparition. Face à ce phénomène, communautés et hommes politiques manifestent des attitudes très contrastées…

Gaziantep'in Çingene Kızı Kanada'yı fethetti

Gaziantep’in simgeleri arasında yer alan Çingene Kızı Mozaiği, Kanada’da düzenlenen Mosaiculture Fuarı ve Yarışması’nda birinci seçildi.

Dünyadaki tarihi ve kültürel eserlerin canlı bitkiler kullanılarak sergilendiği ve tanıtıldığı Mosaiculture organizasyonuna Çingene Kızı Projesi ile katılan Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyesi, fuara damgasını vurdu. Çiçeklerle oluşturulan ülke sembollerinin farklı bir teknikle ziyaretçilere sunulduğu organizasyonda, Büyükşehir Belediyesi ekibi Çingene Kızı Mozaiği’ni bir hafta süren çalışmanın ardından, 120 metrekare alan üzerine 15 çeşit bitkiden oluşan 18 bin 576 çiçek kullanarak resmetti.

Türkiye'den sadece Gaziantep katıldığı ve birbirinden ilginç çalışmaların yer aldığı fuarda Çingene Kızı Mozaiği birinci seçilerek altın madalya ile ödüllendirildi. Organizasyona katılan Büyükşehir Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Daire Başkanı Şafak Tercan, "Şehrimizi en iyi şekilde temsil etmemizin haklı gururunu yaşıyoruz. Bu başarıda bize destek olan başta Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanımız Asım Güzelbey'e ve diğer ekip arkadaşlarımıza teşekkür ediyorum." dedi.

Büyükşehir Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Daire Başkanı Şafak Tercan, "1998 yılında Montreal Belediyesi tarafından oluşturulan bu organizasyon, dünyadaki tarihi ve kültürel eserlerin canlı bitkiler kullanmak sureti ile sergilenmesi ve tanıtılmasını amaç edinmiştir. Zaman zaman farklı ülkelerde de gerçekleştirilen bu organizasyon ülkelerin tanıtımına katkı sağladığı gibi düzenlendiği kentlere de ayrı bir hareketlilik getirmekte, bu hareketlilik neticesinde ciddi ekonomik girdiler de sağlamakta." diye konuştu.

World-renowned Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say has received one of the most prestigious awards in European classical music, the ECHO special jury award.

Say received the award for his Istanbul Symphony composition. According to a written statement made by the jury, “Say received the award for his success at combining East and West in his symphony.”

The Istanbul Symphony has been played by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Gürer Aykal, Burcu Karadağ on the ney, Hakan Güngör on the kanun and Aykut Köselerli on percussion.

In 2008, Say received an award in the best chamber music category for a self-titled album he recorded with Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. The award is given annually by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie, an association of German recording companies.

In 2001, he also received the best composer award for a Stravinsky interpretation. The Istanbul Symphony is 45 minutes long and composed of seven parts. The symphony has been played in 50 different concerts.

Say has also released a new album, “Mesopotamia,” featuring “Mesopotamia Symphony no.2” and “Universe Symphony no.3.” The album is already available in stores worldwide.

Literatürk Festival to be held in October

The Literatürk Festival will open on Oct 1 with a presentation by famous poet and writer Murathan Mungan.

The Turkish-German Literature Festival Literatürk, which is annually organized in Germany’s Essen and is first of its kind in the country, will be organized this year between Oct. 1 and 9.

The festival was launched on Sept. 10 at a press conference, attended by Literatürk Festival General Coordinator Semra Uzun-Önder, organizer Fatma Uzun, Johannes Brackmann, Andreas Goldberg and Cem Şentürk of the Turkish Research Foundation (TAM), which supports the festival.

The festival will take place in Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund, along with Essen, with the participation of many renowned figures from Turkey and Germany. The event will open on Oct. 1 with a presentation by famous poet and writer Murathan Mungan. Poet Gülten Akın will also read her poems and on the seventh day of the festival, journalist-writer Can Dündar will talk about Gezi Park events in Essen. Mirza Odabaşı, Frank Sundermeyer, Alper Canıgüz, Murat Gülsoy, Lütfiye Güzel, Gerrit Wustmann and Tanıl Bora will be other guests of the nine-day festival.

General Coordinator Semra Uzun-Önder said the “literary winds would blow in different venues of the Ruhr Basin,” and invited all literary lovers in the region to the event.

Literatürk was first organized in 2005 and has so far hosted many representatives of Turkish and German culture and literature in 99 events, with the number of festival attendees increasing every year. It is a platform to make a contribution to relations between the two societies through culture and literature. One of the goals of the festival is to create a platform for young talents to make their voices heard.
