Ancient mosaics discovered in Osmaniye

Ancient mosaics were discovered on Jan 7 in the southern province of Osmaniye’s Kadirli district, which is known for its radish production. One of the mosaics depicts a radish, officials said, adding that they also found the first written document regarding Kadirli on the mosaics.

1,800-year-old mosaic found in ancient city of Perge

A 1,800-year-old mosaic, which showed the sacrifice of Iphigenia, the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra during the Trojan War in Greek mythology, was found at excavation works in the ancient city of Perge in Turkey’s Mediterranean region.

Perge excavations head and Antalya Museum Director Mustafa Demirel said a new mosaic was unearthed when the archeological team was working to open a shop in the west wing of the site.

“We have found a 1,800-year-old mosaic that depicts the sacrifice of İphigenia during the Trojan War in the city of ancient Perge. This finding, which makes us quite excited, was unearthed when we were working to open a shop in the west wing. We have found out that this was a sacred cult area,” he said.

Phigenia was the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra in Greek mythology.

Prisoners working on excavations of ancient city’s mosaics in Black Sea region

Prisoners in the Black Sea province of Karabük’s Eskipazar district are working on excavations at the ancient city of Hadrinaupolis, which is known as the “Zeugma of the Black Sea” thanks to its mosaics.

As part of a protocol signed between the Eskipazar District Governor’s Office and the Eskipazar Penal Institution, 10 prisoners, who come to the ancient city every morning under the escort of two guards, conduct excavations during business hours to earn money. The head of the excavations is Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University Archaeology Department Professor Vedat Keleş.

Archaeologist Ersin Çelikbaş said they were very pleased with the prisoners. “Ten prisoners are working here every day. Now they are working to close the roof of the Church B. The church, which dates back to the early Byzantine era, should be protected. It is home very precious mosaics. We are pleased with them and they are also pleased to be working for us.”

The ancient city is expected to become a Christian pilgrimage center when the work is done.

Mosaic with apple figure at museum

A 1,700 year-old mosaic with an apple figure at its center has been taken to be displayed at Amasya’s museum, after being discovered in the province located in Turkey’s north. Stating that mosaic will be a permanent fixture in the museum collection, museum director Celal Özdemir said the apple figure in the mosaic reveals the history of the famous Amasya apple.” With an apple tree, partridge and various geometric figures, the mosaic is very important to the history of Amasya, according to Özdemir.

The mosaic was found in an area of illegal excavations in July. The 20-square-meter mosaic, which forms the ground of a chapel dating from the 3rd century A.D., was transferred to the Amasya Museum.

Gaziantep'in Çingene Kızı Kanada'yı fethetti

Gaziantep’in simgeleri arasında yer alan Çingene Kızı Mozaiği, Kanada’da düzenlenen Mosaiculture Fuarı ve Yarışması’nda birinci seçildi.

Dünyadaki tarihi ve kültürel eserlerin canlı bitkiler kullanılarak sergilendiği ve tanıtıldığı Mosaiculture organizasyonuna Çingene Kızı Projesi ile katılan Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyesi, fuara damgasını vurdu. Çiçeklerle oluşturulan ülke sembollerinin farklı bir teknikle ziyaretçilere sunulduğu organizasyonda, Büyükşehir Belediyesi ekibi Çingene Kızı Mozaiği’ni bir hafta süren çalışmanın ardından, 120 metrekare alan üzerine 15 çeşit bitkiden oluşan 18 bin 576 çiçek kullanarak resmetti.

Türkiye'den sadece Gaziantep katıldığı ve birbirinden ilginç çalışmaların yer aldığı fuarda Çingene Kızı Mozaiği birinci seçilerek altın madalya ile ödüllendirildi. Organizasyona katılan Büyükşehir Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Daire Başkanı Şafak Tercan, "Şehrimizi en iyi şekilde temsil etmemizin haklı gururunu yaşıyoruz. Bu başarıda bize destek olan başta Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanımız Asım Güzelbey'e ve diğer ekip arkadaşlarımıza teşekkür ediyorum." dedi.

Büyükşehir Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Daire Başkanı Şafak Tercan, "1998 yılında Montreal Belediyesi tarafından oluşturulan bu organizasyon, dünyadaki tarihi ve kültürel eserlerin canlı bitkiler kullanmak sureti ile sergilenmesi ve tanıtılmasını amaç edinmiştir. Zaman zaman farklı ülkelerde de gerçekleştirilen bu organizasyon ülkelerin tanıtımına katkı sağladığı gibi düzenlendiği kentlere de ayrı bir hareketlilik getirmekte, bu hareketlilik neticesinde ciddi ekonomik girdiler de sağlamakta." diye konuştu.
