VAN – Anadolu Agency

Officials were informed about the existence of a historic castle-like structure in a field in eastern Van when a local showed them photos of the structure, which may be from the Middle Ages

A castle-like structure has been discovered in the eastern province of Van’s Çaldıran district, near the Iranian border. The structure is situated in a field on a hill some 2,000 meters high in Çaldıran’s Yücelen neighborhood, which overlooks Mount Ararat and a number of nearby settlements. The structure is mostly stone rubble around five meters tall.

Associated Professor Rafet Çavuşoğlu, the head of Yüzüncü Yıl University’s archaeology department said, “I have seen the photos. Considering the traces of the structure’s foundation, it looks like a castle.”

Environmental campaigners are celebrating after an ancient temple on Mount Beşparmak (Latmos) in western Turkey was taken under protection, while noting that more needs to be done to save the area as a whole.

The holy temple at the ancient site of Latmos in Turkey’s Aydın province was recently registered by the Aydın Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board and officials from the Aydın Archaeology Museum.

Association of Nature Lovers and the Protection of Ecosystems (EKODOSD) head Bahattin Sürücü expressed his happiness with the decision while saying Latmos should be protected as a whole.

3D images of Syrian archaeological treasures go online

3D reconstructions of some of Syria’s most spectacular archaeological sites went online on March 15 after a big push to digitalize the war-torn country’s threatened heritage.

French digital surveyors have been working with Syrian archaeologists to map some of the country’s most famous monuments after Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists sparked international outrage by blowing up two temples in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmyra last year.

The 8th-century Umayyad Mosque in the capital Damascus, regarded by some as the fourth holiest place in Islam, and the Krak des Chevaliers Crusader castle near the ravaged city of Homs are the two most famous buildings to have been scanned in minute detail.
