Expropriation works almost finished for historic theater İZMİR – DHA

A Roman theater, stuck in between shanty towns in the Aegean province of İzmir’s Kadifekale, is being expropriated for nearly 12 million Turkish liras with plans to unearth its fascinating 16,000-person capacity.

It is believed that the theater, where the second century Christian bishop of İzmir St. Polycarp was killed, would be a great center for the world of Christianity.

İzmir, known as Smyrna in ancient times, has hosted various civilizations in its 8,500-year-old history. The province’s municipality has so far paid 11.889 million liras for expropriation works to resurface the ancient Roman Theater.

The decision to expropriate has been made by the municipality over 164 parcels on an area of 12,974 square meters. So far, the municipality has purchased the land title over an area of 11,894 square meters.

Archaeological works to unearth the theater are being carried out within a protocol between the municipality and the Culture and Tourism Ministry. Works have been put on hold for some time but will commence again soon.

Turkey’s first ‘slow food’ neighborhood

The Germiyan neighborhood in the western province of İzmir’s Çeşme district has been launched as Turkey’s first “slow food” neighborhood by the Slow Food movement, which brings small producers and natural food into forefront against industrial production.

The protocol was signed on May 15 by the representatives of Slow Food Turkey and Slow Food Germiyan.
Çeşme District Governor Mustafa Erkayıran said people were reacting against the estrangement caused by industrialization and wanted to return to more traditional ways of doing things.

“We try to realize the production of 100-200 years ago in villages. Germiyan will be the first place for this trial,” Erkayıran added.

Nedim Atilla, a founding member of Slow Food Turkey, said Germiyan would “go down in history” as Turkey’s first slow food neighborhood.

“Germiyan is an urban neighborhood, but we call it village symbolically. With this protocol, Germiyan will protect its values and clean products will be produced here. Vegetables will not be grown here out of their natural season. Germiyan’s bread and Kopanisti cheese will survive as the region’s important brands.

Products unique to Germiyan will be sold here for one year with a logo featuring a snail with an olive branch in its mouth.

The spokesperson of Slow Food Germiyan, Engin Önen, said the movement was becoming more popular in Turkey.

“These products do not contain chemical products, they are clean. They will reach consumers via this movement. The people of Germiyan have worked for two years to realize this. Now with our 27 members, we will start producing,” Önen added.

A range of historical artifacts such as medical material, coins and ceramics found in the Neikaia ancient city in the Ödemiş province of İzmir are being exhibited at the Ödemiş Museum.

There have been many historical artifacts found at the site of the 2,300 year-old ancient city of Neikaia such as medical materials, coins, architectural and ceramic material. The ancient city is 10 kilometers away from Ödemiş, between the Türkonü and Kurucuova villages. The ancient city has an importance of being a health center of the time and also being connected to the Ephesus with the name Nikopolis in the sixth century B.C. The findings could not be promoted in the best way before, due to the fact that the city was in a hilly area. Prof. Dr. Veli Sevin, an ancient era historian and archeologist, has written a 96-page book about the ancient city, entitled “Naikaia, a Forgotten Ancient City.” The exhibition being held at the Ödemiş Museum aims to make the city, which started to be known about through the book, known all around the country.

Artifacts at exhibit

The exhibition is displaying three pieces of marble, nine glass pieces, four kerosene lamps made from baked soil and 16 bowls made from the soil, 1 mirror, a bronze bone medical material and a few bronze coins.

Among the guests attending the opening of the exhibition late last week were archeology department academic Prof. Dr. Serap Yaylalı, the manager of the Ödemiş Yıldız Town Records Museum Prof. Dr. Engin Berber, the manager of the Ödemiş Museum Sevda Çetin, editorial office manager of the district Mahmut Yeniay, the Director of Education of the district Cevdet Ünlü, art historian Prof. Dr. Necla Sevin, Food and Agriculture District Manager of Ödemiş İbrahim Altıntaş and Ödemiş Culture and Social Projects Manager Ufuk Kızıler.

The manager of the Ödemiş Museum Sevda Çetin said that they had started the themed exhibitions with the Neikaia Ancient City and that these would continue in order to introduce the other beauties of the city.

The art historian Prof. Dr. Necla Sevin emphasized the importance of Neikaia in history and added, “One of the most important specialties of Neikaia is that it was a health center at that time. There is much evidence of this in the findings. Ancient documents are talking about this area. The richest mercury sources of the world are in this area. These mine pits have been used since the ancient times. The importance of these mines is that they have been used in varied areas such as medicine. At the ancient era, people imported medicine and cosmetics to the world, via the Ephesus port. Another specialty of the city is that they had minted coins.”

The Hagia Haralambos Church, which had been neglected in İzmir’s town of Çeşme for many years, has recently been restored and reopened as a cultural center.

The church, which was built in 1832 as a Greek Orthodox place of worship, was restored by a Çeşme Municipality initiative with the support of the Province Special Directorate.

The historic structure was renovated at a cost of 2 million Turkish Liras and transformed into an important place in the town’s artistic life.

Çeşme Mayor Faik Tütüncüoğlu said that the nearly ruined structure drew great interest after its reopening as a culture and arts center, and that applications for 2013 exhibitions were almost full.

İZMİR'İ ZİRVEYE TAŞIYOR

The İzmir Mask Museum, Turkey’s first mask museum opened by the Konak Municipality, attempts to immortalize the faces of famous figures in masks while they are still alive.

Besides various masks made by artists in different categories, the museum also displays “death masks,” which have been made taking the face molds of people after their death. Among these faces are famous poet Tevfik Fikret and writer Aziz Nesin.

The museum has also developed its “life masks” project following a bitter experience at the workshop working to enrich the number in the “death masks” collection.

İzmir Mask Museum Workshop instructor Eylem Sürer said the previous goal of the workshop was to create masks of famous figures’ faces in order to immortalize them.

She said the same method was used around the world to create masks of dead people, adding that it was not easy to approach the families of dead people.

Sürer said that to widen the death mask collection, they attempted to take a mold of renowned journalist Mehmet Ali Birand, who recently died. “As the museum, we want to immortalize dead people by taking a mold of their face. The day after Birand died, we asked permission from his family, but the grieving family did not give permission. Of course we should understand them. After having this experience, we thought that it would be easier to take molds of living people’s faces. Lots of people may want it. This is why we believe that we won’t have a problem. Our goal is to reach famous people. Then we will make a first by making the collection of “life masks” in our museum.”

She said it was very easy to take the mold of a face. “It takes eight to 10 minutes and it turns into a mask in 15-20 minutes.”

‘Life mask collection’

Sürer said that in the “life mask” collection, they first asked to make masks of all living Yeşilçam (Turkey’s Hollywood) stars.

“We also want to have the mask of renowned names of the music, literary and art worlds. I want to make the mask of the sultan of Turkish cinema, Türkan Şoray, as well as comedian Levent Kırca and musician Erkin Koray. Also, we should take the mold of writer Yaşar Kemal’s face while he is alive. If the artists do not want to come to İzmir, we can go to them.”
