Thousands of Alevis gathered in a massive rally in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district on Nov. 3, demanding equal citizenship rights and freedom of faith, while also raising their voice against projects aiming to “assimilate Alevis.”

Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “We won’t be the state’s Alevis,” and “We will never bend the knee to injustice,” as well as slogans referring to the anti-government Gezi Park protests that were sparked in May.

Around 50 Alevi associations and political parties were represented in the rally.

Alevis, who follow a liberal sect of Islam, voiced several demands, including the removal of compulsory religion courses in schools, official recognition of their worship places, Cemevis, and investigations into the unknown murders of Alevis.

Legal status demanded

“We want our beliefs to have legal status so the Alevi community can perform its rituals freely,” the Pir Sultan Abdal Association stated on its website, in its call to the rally. It calls for the cancelation of a project in which a mosque and a Cemevi will be built next to each other in Ankara, in a project supported by Muslim cleric Fetullah Gülen.

“This project will have no result other than assimilation and conflict between people of different beliefs,” said the statement.

Alevis also demand the removal of the compulsory religion courses, as well as the Religious Affairs Directorate on the ground that it is a conflicting situation that “a secular country has an institution which only serves Sunni Hanefi Muslims.” They also demand the return of land, Cemevis, and other assets that were confiscated by the state. The estates belonging to Alevis such as Hacı Bektaş Veli Dergâh Şahkulu, Garipdede and Erikli Baba should be returned to Alevi communities without any cost, it said.

The perpetrators of the Alevi murders that took place in the past should be found out, Alevis demand. The Alevi’s worship places, Cemevis, must have legal ground with amendments, according to the Alevi Associations. The Massacres targeting Alevis that took place in Sivas, Çorum, Maraş and Istanbul’s Gazi Quarter must be brought to light, the statute of limitations in such cases must be removed and those responsible must come to justice, Alevis said in their demand.

They also call for the removal of Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim’s name from the third bridge that is being built over the Istanbul strait on the ground that the Sultan is notorious for his orders that killed over 40,000 Alevis. All discriminations against Alevis in public and private institutions must be removed and all restrictions regarding rallies and expression must be removed, said the association’s statement.

Shepherd kills first Anatolian leopard sighted in Turkey for years

An Anatolian leopard was killed by a shepherd in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Nov. 3, drawing attention back to a species long thought extinct within Turkey's borders.

The shepherd, Kasım Kaplan, said the animal had suddenly attacked him from behind while he was outside his village grazing his cattle.

"We were on a cliff when all of a sudden something jumped on me. I wrestled with the animal that I did not recognize. We fell around 1.5 meters and rolled for 10 meters. I was injured by his claws when he jumped again on me where we fell," Kaplan said.

At this point, his cousin Mahmut Kaplan, who was accompanying him, shot the animal with his rifle.

A biologist from Diyarbakır's Dicle University analyzed the dead animal's body, and said it was the first time he had seen such a leopard since another one was killed in the nearby Siirt province in 2010. That had been the first leopard seen in Anatolia for more than 35 years.

"It's the first time that a leopard has been seen [in Diyarbakır]. We don't know how he came here, but it's an itinerant type of animal. We know that they live in Iran," Professor Murat Birecik said.

Birecik's colleague, Ahmet Kılıç, said the animal may have offspring and called for their protection. "The reappearance of the Anatolian leopard, which we have thought of as extinct for centuries, is very exciting. It's appearance in Diyarbakır is a miracle. Probably the villagers entered the area where the animal lived, or it may have offspring nearby. It appears to be a young, teenage leopard. Officials should immediately protect the zone," Kılıç said.

One of the causes of the leopard's extinction is thought to be trophy hunting, which was widespread until the 1970s. Leopards once also populated the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, according to scientists, some of whom maintain that around a dozen still remain in the wild in Turkey's eastern provinces.

Piri Reis and his maps rediscovered

ISTANBUL - Anadolu Agency

This month different areas of Turkey host Piri Reis collections and exhibitions, with Istanbul’s Maritime Museum opening a new show for the 500th anniversary of the Piri Reis World Map

The Piri Reis map was drawn in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral. The approximately one-third of the map that survives shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Events are underway around Turkey in honor of the half-millennium since famous Ottoman maritime cartographer created a world map, with important exhibitions and collections scheduled for Istanbul.

“In this exhibition we can see something more than a map,” Culture and Tourism Minister Ömer Çelik
said in opening an exhibition at Istanbul’s Maritime Museum, adding that the exhibition also showed Turkish history and Turkish maritime history.

Noting that until today it had been difficult to say there were any strategic works concerning the seas, Çelik said it was essential for Turkey, a country surrounded by water on three sides, to use the sea more affectively. “All the political developments in the recent days such as the Arab Spring and developments in the eastern Mediterranean parts of the world show us how important the seas are for us.”

Significant figure in maritime history

Piri Reis was one of the most significant figures in the rise of the Ottoman Empire, Çelik said, adding that he was important both in the marine sciences and as a researcher.

Turkish officials have prepared a series of events within the scope of the celebrations and commemoration program.

HDN The fact that UNESCO is remembering Piri Reis, who wrote his name in history for his contributions to world cartography, after 500 years is crucial in refreshing the world’s memory and remembering what Turks gave the world of science, he said.

Upon Turkey’s proposal, UNESCO included the 500th anniversary of Piri Reis’ world map in the 2013 celebrations and commemorations program for its 36th General Conference that was held in Paris in 2011.

The Piri Reis map was drawn in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral. The approximately one-third of the map that survives shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Various Atlantic islands including the Azores and Canary Islands are depicted, as is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan. The historical importance of the map lies in its demonstration of the extent of Ottoman exploration of the new world by approximately 1510.

The map was discovered accidentally in 1929 by German theologian Gustav Adolf Deissmann, who was commissioned by the Education Ministry to catalogue the Topkapı Palace library’s non-Islamic items.
Although Piri Reis was not an explorer and never sailed to the Atlantic, he compiled over 20 maps of Arab, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Indian and older Greek origins into a comprehensive representation of the known world of his era. The work included the recently explored shores of both the African and American continents.

Çelik, meanwhile, also lamented the disappearance of past naval traditions, saying, “30 years ago, ships [waited] in front of Beşiktaş’s Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa grave and saluted it. This was a tradition. Now many traditions have been forgotten.”

Kitâb-ı Bahriyye maps become a collection

Meanwhile, Piri Reis’ “Kitâb-ı Bahriyye,” made between 1521 and 1525, has now become a 40-piece collection.

The book was translated into Turkish upon the order of Mehmed II. Apart from the maps, the book also contained detailed information on the major ports, bays, gulfs, capes, peninsulas, islands, straits and ideal shelters of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as techniques of navigation and navigation-related information on astronomy, together with information about the local people of each country and city and the curious aspects of their culture. Antalya Maps and Cadastre manager Ramazan Eciş said the collection consists of 40 pieces.

The maps give people a look at the shores of Antalya shores 500 years ago, he said, adding that the pieces show how sociological and geographic changes affected the shores.
