Piri Reis map on display in Rome

The Italian capital Rome is hosting the second “Piri Reis 1513 World Map: 500 Years of Mystery,” which was opened on Dec. 1 as part of the events to celebrate the 500th year of the world map.

The exhibition was created during a workshop held in the northwestern province of Çanakkale’s Çan district with the participation of Italian Ivo Sassi, Greek Kostas Karakitsos, Egyptian Ossama Emam, French Elisabeth Le Retif, Spanish Xavier Monsalvatje and U.S. Charles Wissinger, as well as Turkish ceramic artists İsmail Bütün, Burak Çiftçi, Ayşegül Şahin and Mustafa Tunçalp.

The exhibition features 90 large maps by Piri Reis and nearly 30 ceramic artworks.

The Turkish Ambassador to Rome, Hakkı Akil, who hosted the event, spoke about the importance of Piri Reis, saying, ”Piri Reis was one of the most important cartographers in his era and one of the most famous admirals in the Ottoman maritime history. His book ‘Kitab-ı Bahriye’ is one of the most used maps in the field of geography.”
